Wesley H. Self, MD, MPH

Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine 

Dr. Self joined the Vanderbilt Emergency Medicine faculty in 2009. He graduated from Davidson College, where he was an Academic All-American baseball player, and then from the University of Virginia School of Medicine with AOA honors. He completed residency in emergency medicine and served as chief resident at Northwestern University. He graduated from the Master of Public Health program at Vanderbilt University in 2011. Additionally, Dr. Self has completed two fellowship programs—the Veterans Affairs National Quality Scholars Fellowship and the Comprehensive Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship sponsored by the National Patient Safety Foundation and American Hospital Association. He was the 2011-2012 Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Patient Safety Research Fellow.

Dr. Self is a physician-scientist focusing on improving the treatment of patients with infectious diseases in the emergency department. His research involves disease entities such as pneumonia, sepsis, influenza, and soft tissue infections. He leads emergency department-based clinical trials, epidemiologic studies, and patient safety initiatives.
