Dr. Barrett attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed a transitional year internship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center followed by residency in Emergency Medicine at UCLA/Olive View-UCLA. Prior to joining Vanderbilt’s faculty, Dr. Barrett served as chief resident in Emergency Medicine at UCLA. He was awarded a 2-year Vanderbilt Physician-Scientist Development Award and completed a Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation in 2010. Dr. Barrett serves as Medical Director, Director of Process Improvement, and Quality & Patient Safety Director. He leads the Department’s Documentation Compliance and Reimbursement program. He was awarded the 2010-11 Emergency Medicine Foundation Young Investigator Award and was supported as principal investigator by a NHLBI K23 award. His research interests include the emergency department management of atrial fibrillation, utilizing risk stratification to augment physician decision-making, and developing personalized treatment protocols. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, reviews and abstracts. Dr. Barrett serves on the editorial board of Annals of Emergency Medicine. He was selected as a Fellow of The American College of Emergency Physicians in 2008. Dr. Barrett was awarded Fellowship in the Heart Rhythm Society in 2014. Dr. Barrett is married and his wife, Kelly, also works at Vanderbilt University in the Information Technology department.
