Dr. Boyd joined Vanderbilt in 2013 as the department's first emergency ultrasound fellow, after which he served as the emergency ultrasound fellowship director, followed by division director in 2019. In 2022 he was named the department’s first director of Faculty Education and Training, overseeing continuing professional development for faculty across each of the department’s clinical sites in addition to serving as core faculty for the residency and overseeing resident education in emergency ultrasound. His interests include the teaching and use of point-of-care ultrasound in multiple settings (ED/ICU, international, and prehospital), medical education at all stages, and wilderness medicine. He teaches and has lectured on point of care ultrasound locally, nationally, and internationally from Memphis to Fairbanks to Georgetown, Guyana. He has served on the board of directors of the National Resident Matching Program (the Match) and was Chief Resident at the University of Cincinnati where he completed residency training prior to joining faculty at Vanderbilt. A Memphis native and Philosophy major at Rhodes College in Memphis, as well as a graduate of the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program of Columbia University and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, he now enjoys exploring Music City and the natural surroundings of Middle Tennessee with his wife, a middle-school librarian, their three young daughters and Satulah, their minimally behaved golden retriever.
