Dr. Smith did his undergraduate training at Union University where he met his wife Joy. He went to the University of Tennessee in Memphis for medical school training. He then completed the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics combined residency followed by an Emergency Medicine residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine. His interests center on improving patient care by research knowledge translation, helping Emergency Medicine physicians/clinicians keep up with the medical literature. He is also the President and Medical Director for the Vanderbilt Health Clinic at Walgreens fourteen locations in the Nashville area. He divides his time evenly between the adult and pediatric emergency departments and enjoys the variety this offers. He has written several articles and abstracts and has lectured locally, nationally, and internationally. Outside the hospital he enjoys spending time with his wife and children, running, and backpacking. He is also involved with his church and with a non-profit partnership to improve healthcare and reduce maternal and infant mortality in the Ouest department of Haiti.
