Jeremy S. Boyd, MD
Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine
Division Director
Dr. Boyd’s roots are deepest in Memphis, though he grew up in the southeast and pacific northwest. He attended undergraduate at Rhodes College in Memphis, where he majored in Philosophy with a minor in Spanish. He then spent two years mostly in the Phoenix area working in outdoor education and the climbing industry, with some stints of substitute teaching. After obtaining his WFR and EMT, he entered the postbaccalaureate premedical program at Columbia University in New York city. He then attended the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University and completed his residency training at the University of Cincinnati, during which two of his three girls were born. Having completed his Tennessee exodus, he joined Vanderbilt as the first emergency ultrasound fellow in 2013. Before becoming the ultrasound division director he served several years as the fellowship director as well as an assistant program director for the residency. He is passionate about medical education, all things soundwaves, and is actively involved in the development of the “Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound” subspecialty/focused practice designation. A girl dad of three amazing school age girls and one very golden (retriever) girl, he lives with his wife and family in the Green Hills area. He enjoys swimming, grilling, boardgaming, and most other things geek, but mostly he enjoys time spent on the back porch with his family.
Jordan Rupp, MD

Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Director
Dr. Rupp is originally from Archbold, Ohio. He went to college at Taylor University, medical school at Wright State University, and residency at Indiana University. He joined the faculty at Vanderbilt to complete an ultrasound fellowship and then a global health fellowship. After fellowship, he remained on the faculty. He and his wife, Kelsey, love living in Nashville and just welcomed their first child, Finn.
Dr. Rupp’s academic interests are point-of-care ultrasound, global health, and especially ultrasound in global health. He serves as the Program Director of the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship. Outside the emergency department, he enjoys spending time with his family and outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and paddle boarding.
Matt Lipton, MD
Dr. Lipton is a California native who completed his undergraduate studies at University of California, San Diego where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry/Cell Biology. He then moved to Chicago where he earned his medical degree from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. During his 4th year in medical school, he was nominated into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. After graduating medical school, he moved to Nashville, TN to complete his residency in Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University. Following his residency, he moved to Salt Lake City, UT to complete a fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound at the University of Utah. Before coming back to Vanderbilt, he was the Emergency Ultrasound Director for a busy community ER in Charlotte, NC. His current interests include critical care ultrasound, medical student/resident/fellow education, and quality assurance for ultrasounds performed in the ED. In addition to his medical interests, he became interested personal finance soon after he graduated from fellowship. Now he gives financial lectures to medical student & residents and has created a personal finance interest group at Vanderbilt to focus on physician finances. When not working in the ED, he enjoys snowboarding, hiking, and spending time with his wife and 2 kids.

Dr. Bales spent his undergraduate years as a Holton Scholar at DePauw University majoring in biochemistry and Spanish before attending Indiana University School of Medicine graduating as a member of the Gold Humanism Society. He graduated residency from the University of Cincinnati and then came to Vanderbilt to complete a fellowship in Global Health which led to developing a passion for POCUS. He and Dr. Jordan Rupp co-founded went on to develop a non-for-profit, Global Sounds Project, which aims to improve health care delivery in resource limited settings by equipping physicians with ultrasound equipment and education. He completed a faculty based POCUS fellowship in 2018. His POCUS interests include global health education and development (serving as US faculty for the Guyana based emergency medicine residency), as well as domestic faculty, resident, and medical student education. He serves as faculty with the VA SimLearn initiative and is also currently leading the implementation of POCUS with the Lifeflight program.

Brian Bales, MD
Mary Kate Jordan, MD

Dr. Jordan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University. She is originally from Birmingham, AL. After completing her undergraduate degree in Economics in Boston, she then worked in healthcare administration in the United Arab Emirates before obtaining her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. After completing residency training at the University of South Carolina's Palmetto Health Emergency Medicine Residency, she joined Vanderbilt in 2017 where she completed a fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound. Her academic interests include health systems operations & finance, health care equity, education, global health and the application of point of care ultrasound in low resources areas internationally. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, real estate and anything active & outdoors.
Matthew Swarm, MD
Dr. Swarm is an Indiana native who joined as Vanderbilt Emergency Medicine faculty in July of 2016. Dr. Swarm completed his undergraduate work at Indiana University-Bloomington followed by his medical training at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Swarm stayed at IU and completed a combined Emergency Medicine/Pediatrics residency where he served as chief resident during his fifth year. Since joining the faculty at Vanderbilt, Dr. Swarm has completed a focused faculty fellowship in point-of-care ultrasound. Dr. Swarm splits his time between the adult and pediatric emergency departments at Vanderbilt. Dr. Swarm's professional interests include pediatric emergency medicine, resident mentorship, and point-of-care ultrasound. Outside of medicine, Dr. Swarm enjoys spending time with his wife and dogs, being outdoors, international travel, personal fitness, boating, and college athletics.

Jonathan Brewer, MD
Dr. Brewer is a Nashville native that completed his undergraduate and medical school education at Texas A&M University. Staying in Texas, he then completed his residency training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX; where he also served as the Academic Chief Resident. Finalizing his education at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a fellowship in Advanced Emergency Ultrasound, he has been on faculty since. His academic passion lies in the usage of procedural ultrasound for the treatment of acute pain in the emergency department along with underserved care and medical education. He has undergone extensive training in the field of regional anesthesia and is working on implementing this into emergency departments around the country through education and research. In his free time, you’ll find him relaxing with his wife and corgi, staying active outdoors, cooking Texas barbecue, or hanging out with friends.
